Stone Harbor New Jersey
is not only a great place to visit, but a lovely place to live, as well. Set among sand dunes and pristine beaches, visitors and residents alike find it to be a calm and peaceful setting, one of the most relaxing on the Jersey shore. It offers protected beaches, casual seafood restaurants and unique shopping. Stone Harbor is located on “Seven-Mile Island,” which is a barrier island off the coast of New Jersey and is comprised mainly of the communities of Stone Harbor and Avalon. The western shore abuts the Intracoastal Waterway with bays and natural wetlands. The island itself is no more than three or four blocks wide, with Stone Harbor on the south end and Avalon on the north end. The history of the island can be traced back to Sir Walter Raleigh when he was granted a patent in 1584 to what was then known as the Province of New Jersey. The island was used only by fishermen and for cattle grazing until the late 1880s when a developer purchased 3000 acres for a resort area.
The beaches on Stone Harbor are very clean and picturesque, and the boardwalks are mainly for recreation (without all the glitz and concessions of the Ocean City and Atlantic City boardwalks.) Visitors should be aware that “beach tags” are required for use of the beaches, and are available for day use, by the week or for the whole season. Visiting or living in Stone Harbor means enjoying the outdoors – activities such as swimming, fishing, sailing, golf, or just relaxing on the beach is a way of life here. There are yearly special events such as arts & crafts festivals and a fantastic Fourth of July Fireworks display, and attractions such as the Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary, a registered National Landmark run by the National Park Service. In general, Stone Harbor has loads of small town charm, with lots of big town amenities.
Stone Harbor includes some of the most spectacular real estate on the Jersey Shore. You will find mostly family-oriented properties and luxurious seashore homes for sale and for rent. All are modern, well maintained and very appealing. There are a couple of full service resorts located on Seven-Mile Island, but rentals of beach homes dominate the real estate market. All homes located on the island are within walking distance of the beach. If you are arriving for a weekend, traffic onto the island is heaviest from noon Friday until 8:00pm Friday night, and again Saturday morning from 7:00am until around noon. When leaving Stone Harbor, late Sunday night or very early Monday morning is the best time to avoid the rush. Whether you are looking to rent for the season, or thinking of making a more permanent change, there are dozens of well-qualified, helpful real estate agents in the Stone Harbor area to help you. Some have been serving the Seven-Mile Island area since the 1930s and specialize in both sales and rental properties. The local Chamber of Commerce has a business directory with a complete listing of the entire local real estate agents, as well as beach information, special events directory and other information.
